Students participate in various sustainability projects within the community. The service primarily features working on organic coffee farms in rural mountain settings. Students will discuss, analyze, and interpret important issues through participation in group discussions and keeping a field journal during their time in Costa Rica. Additional types of service students may carry out based on the needs of the community are: construction of eco-bricks, sidewalks, roads, school and building refurbishment.
Topics for group discussion will cover: Sustainable Development, Water Conservation, Responsible Tourism, Consumption, Organic Farming, and Climate Change.
Culture, Language, & Immersion
Connecting with members of the local community is essential to the program experience. Students will be able to make these memorable connections in a variety of ways by enjoying:
• Costa Rican dancing, cooking lessons, language exchange, community soccer games
• Spanish Language classes may also be implemented into the programs
• Home Stay experiences offer full immersion living with a local Costa Rican host family
Adventure & Wildlife
Green Communities also offers adventure and wildlife experiences. Some are already included in the program and others may be added. We recommend that our groups conclude their program with these excursions after working hard during service. Enjoy activities like:
• White Water Rafting, Hiking, Waterfall Visits, Volcano Visits, Beach Trips (Pacific & Caribbean), Surf Lessons, Canopy Parks Zip Lining, National Wildlife Parks, Wildlife Reserves
