Body: The ecological organic coffee produced by Green Communities in the Zona de los Santos has been recognized as the best in the world at the World Coffee Challenge held in Spain. In this international competition, seventy-five coffee samples from fifteen different countries participated, and it was the top-level tasters and judges who concluded that Green Communities’ coffee should win four awards for Costa Rica, including the most prestigious one at the World Coffee Challenge.
The awards obtained were the Special Jury Award, First Place in Natural Arabica, First Place in Honey Processed Arabica, and First Place in Central American Coffee. These awards represent the 20 years of effort made by this organization in collaboration with 15 farmers and their families in Providencia de Dota, San Pedro, and Bajo San JosĂ© de TarrazĂș. They also acknowledge the contribution of hundreds of international volunteers who come each year to help transform conventional coffee farms into ecological organic farms.
Jonathan Cerdas, founder and owner of Green Communities, stated, “With these awards, we demonstrate that it is possible to produce coffee while generating zero environmental impact. Our farms are sustainable, we have a waterless micro-mill, we use solar panels for machinery operation, we harness the sun for coffee bean drying, and even our packaging is compostable. I am delighted that we are debunking myths about organic coffee and creating a highly positive impact by educating and delivering the best quality coffee throughout the entire process until it reaches the final consumer.”
These awards mark a milestone in terms of the quality of organic coffee, as evidenced by the results of this competition. Carlos MarĂn, founder and owner of Green Communities, expressed gratitude to all the families, farmers, and students from international organizations who believe in the ecological organic coffee project in the Zona de los Santos. He thanked them for awarding them four of the best coffee types in the competition. He further expressed appreciation for the hard work and dedication of the farmers in the coffee farms where they produce the world’s best coffee, contributing to the environmental and economic development of the Zona de los Santos.
Alejandro Madrigal, President of the Costa Rican Association of Sustainable Gastronomy and Tourism, was present at the awards ceremony in Spain and shared his thoughts, stating, “Trust, respect, and admiration for a project and a process that is linked to sustainability. It is important to mention the Special Jury Award, which is the main accolade of this competition. This coffee set the standard in terms of sustainability
